While researching and selecting recipes for the Indonesian style dinner, I noticed that a lot of recipes, including both fish and rice recipes below, have shallots as a base for the sauce. I had never used or tried shallots before and I thought that they tasted like onions. Turns out they taste somewhat different – more bitter than onions.
| Ikan Rica-Rica – Yellow Spicy Fish |
This is a very light and aromatic dish. Plus, it looks pretty! I didn’t make it as spicy as the recipe called for and I was glad I didn’t because all the flavors were very well pronounced without overpowering with hot chilies. My husband likes fish so he enjoyed extra helpings.![]() |
| Nasi Goreng – Indonesian Style Fried Rice |
| Matthew became a big fan of this rice (he asked me to save the leftovers for him for the next day). Alex also seemed to enjoy it. I, on the other hand, wasn’t impressed at all. The rice turned out to be too bitter for my taste. I’m not claiming that it tasted authentic but anyway I’m not looking forward to making it again. Tough luck. 🙂 |
| Dadar – Sweet Coconut Pancakes |
Very tasty sweet treat. I’m not sure that my coconut filling resembled or tasted authentic because the recipe for the filling didn’t make much sense. The filling turned out to be too dry. I ended up adding a lot more liquids (coconut and evaporated milk) to bring it to a more manageable state. Anyway, the whole family enjoyed the pancakes, however, Matthew and Eugene ate only the pancake part and discarded the coconut filling. Hence, here is the recipe for the pancake but not the filling.![]() Ingredients
In a large bowl combine the flour, eggs, coconut milk, salt, and sugar. Whisk into a smooth batter that has a pouring consistency. Lightly grease a non-stick pan and heat over medium heat until hot. Add a scoop of butter to a pan and rotate it to obtain a thin round layer. Cook until the pancake sets and begins to brown, then flip it over and cook for a few seconds on the other side, and remove from the heat. Repeat until all batter is used. |
