Matthew was very excited about the Japanese week until he realized that I was not intending to make sushi. I decided against sushi not because I don’t like them but because I can’t make them well enough. 🙂
There are so many Japanese specialties that we haven’t tried yet, so I wanted to cook something unexpected.

This is basically a bowl of rice with chicken and egg mixture on top of it (chicken and eggs in the context of the dish translate into mother and children).
This is a mild flavored but nevertheless tasty dish. I would call it Japanese-style comfort food. I cooked it in no time. While rice was still cooking on the stove I prepared the chicken-and-egg part, and as a result I had the dinner ready in 30 minutes. My guys were quite happy with it. I guess I need to make them happy like this more often. There are again a ton of recipes of Oyako Donburi on the Internet. I decided to go with the simplest recipe from bento.com.

Buckwheat cereal is our family’s favorite comfort food and side dish. For example, Eugene can eat it several times per day. However, even though we love buckwheat so much, we never ate buckwheat noodles. Japanese cuisine, I thought, is an excellent opportunity to try them. I modified the original recipe somewhat to address its “spiciness” (no one in our family would eat food that is that spicy). Here is my version of Yakisoba Chicken.
